Homo Festivus
Acrylic/collage on canvas
80 x 80 cm
Homo festivus (in Latin) is a societal concept developed by sociologist Philippe Murray. He speaks of the idea of a Western man who has resigned from his history, stripped of all forms of culture, transcendence and identity, and to whom only the permanent party and spectacle remains to feel alive.
The character in the painting, quite androgynous and outrageously made-up, seems to smile or moan, but above all sinks into the dark waters of a West losing its identity.
In the background, the city seems to be burning, as if bombarded with strange shells.
And a text says in Latin: HOMO FESTIVUS SUBMERSI which could be translated as “the festive man drowns”…
So would the party be over soon?
